What is Breaking Away?
Breaking Away: Opportunities for Life, is a six-month introduction cluster vocational cohort held one day per week for at-risk youth between the ages of 12 and18 residing in Gaston County. The program is free for youth identified as at risk due to juvenile system involvement, DSS referrals, or community-related factors. Referrals may come from probation officers, DSS, schools, parents, or others who know a youth in need of support.
We provide transportation to eliminate access barriers. During the program, participants are offered small meals or snacks, mentorship, and individualized support to meet their needs. Youth also have opportunities to attend college tours and participate in community engagement activities that allow them to explore new environments and experiences outside of their day-to-day routine.
